No matter how many times I saw the first glimpse of the cathedral is slim, light marble spire still inspires a quiet gasp of fear. The cathedral is the symbol of Milan: a product of centuries of politicization ambitions, plunder, graft, fashion and business. And despite its thriving mix of architectural styles, it works somehow.

1. Baptistery

Access through the fourth century Baptistery of a staircase near the main entrance of the Cathedral. The beauty of the home police baptism the early Christians and the ruins of the former cathedral is a fascinating, touching and a contrast to the opulence above.

2. Fans cheer Madonna, Nina

Viewing golden Madonnina (Little Madonna) in the square below the thousands of local soccer nuts singing "O mia bella Mudunnina is one of those" only in Milan "moments. Just do not be fooled by the name : the traditional protector of the city may seem small as it flies over the city, but more than 4m high.

3. View

Make sure to climb the marble stairs to the terraces on the roof, not only Panoramic view (a rare pleasure in Milan), but also a sense of fairy tale, surrounded by mountains of marble stone. It 'also always Visconti fans - one of the harrowing scenes of his 1960 Rocco and his brothers have been set here. Not a lift if you can not manage the stairs.

4. The Cathedral Concert

Watch out for occasional concerts of ancient music of the Cathedral classical and sacred. Cathedral School of Music has coached boys choir from 1402 (on hold, they know their stuff), and the life of the Cathedral is one of the best in the world. It 'also a good way to avoid the tour-group of the circus. You can find details of the Choir (Choir) web page, the Duomo.

5th A modern view

In front of the north side of the Milan Duomo Cathedral is the largest department store La Rinascente. Head up to 7 Obika floor and a glass of prosecco local, fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese plate, and an unusual, close-up view of the pinnacles.

history

In 1386 the archbishop, Antonio da Saluzzo, began the new project in a rayonnant Late Gothic style that is more characteristic of France than Italy. Work proceeded for generations.

The main spire was topped in 1762 with a polychrome statue of the Madonna, to whom the Duomo and its predecessor have always been dedicated.
